NEW VIDEO: Night Photography - Tips and Tricks

One of my favorite times to take photos is after the sun has dropped below the horizon. Not only is it more challenging to shoot during this time, but the images can be really dynamic.  Since so many of you have told me you prefer videos explaining my techniques, I just completed a new video on this subject.

You can click the image above to watch the video

In this new video, I share my tips and tricks with all of you so that you can capture great night shots of your own.

Here are some of my favorite night photos, which are featured in the video...

The Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England

Old Town Boston

Cologne, Germany during the blue hour

The Bay Bridge in San Francisco (my home town)

The Sydney Opera House during the VIVID light show

Rolling the zoom during the exposure in New York City (explained in the video)

Again, you can watch the video by clicking this link. Enjoy!!!

A unique view of the Apple Park "Spaceship" in Cupertino, CA

As we continue living under the cloud of Covid-19, I am getting more and more stir crazy, and looking for new ways to get creative. About a month ago, I had an idea to dust off the DJI Phantom 4 drone, which hasn't been used in forever, and to fly over the new Apple campus.

Normally, this would not be possible, with so many people in the area. But now that this massive campus is basically a ghost town, I thought that it would be interesting to get photos and video capturing this unique perspective.

We had perfect weather this weekend and I decided that it was time to make this happen.

As you can see from this first image, the Apple headquarters (which people have knick-named the "Spaceship") is absolutely massive! But I will get to that a little later. Before I do that, I wanted to show you some images I captured back in 2015 and 2016 as they were building this structure.

This was 5 years ago when this was a giant construction zone.

In 2016, I went back with my Phantom 3 drone and captured these images of the building midway through construction.

And as I mentioned, this weekend was the perfect time to take photos and videos of Apple Park. I flew the Phantom 4 around the campus for at least 20 minutes and had a great time collecting really exciting video.

I got home and started going through the video clips to build a short film of what I had seen. As I was putting together the different clips in Adobe Premier Pro, I realized that it would be really cool to go back through the old footage to combine those into this short piece. I also researched some of the amazing facts about this campus and added those to the film.

I hope that you take a look at the new video and be awe inspired for yourself. This is like no other building you have ever seen.

NEW VIDEO - Leading Lines and Repeating Patterns in Photography

In this new video, I talk about the use of leading lines and repeating patterns in the composition of photos. It is a simple technique, but one that can add a lot of drama to an otherwise plain image. I hope that, after watching this video, you will search out interesting leading lines and patterns to make your photos that much better.

A tribute to Charlie Daniels - my photographs of him from the Grand Ole Opry House

It was back in the summer of 2011 when I made my one and only visit to the Grand Ole Opry House in Tennessee. I was there with a couple of other photographers / videographers for a project and we happened to squeeze in time for a show.

We had no idea who would be on the lineup that evening, and were treated to a performance by Charlie Daniels.

I was sad today to see that he passed away at the age of 83.

I can tell you this, even at the age of 74, that man knew how to put on a show!

During his performance of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" he was tearing up his bow.

Even though I am not hugely knowledgeable about the old time country music stars, I knew about Charlie Daniels. I loved the "Devil Goes Down..." song and it was such a blast to be there to experience his performance live and right up front of the stage.

I am sure that his legend will live on for quite some time!
