Today was the first USA Water Polo match for the women - and we had some big VIP surprises!

I am going a little out of order here, since I actually photographed men's gymnastics this morning, but I promise I will get to that blog post soon. Hey, there are only so many hours in a day. Last night I went to sleep at 1:30am and woke up at 7am to start today. But this is the Olympics and I don't want to miss good photo opportunities. And now it is 11:15pm and I am still going. Wait to you hear who showed up to the game today. But wait...

The game started strong for the woman of USA Water Polo, taking a commanding lead over Greece in a hurry.

Today I used the Canon R1 and Canon RF 100-300mm lens almost exclusively. That combination is just awesome!

I was able to zoom in and get right into the action...

...but also zoom back out to get wider shots like this.

I love photographing Ashely Johnson. She has an artistic beauty in the way she plays.

Oh yeah - Flavor Flav was in the house once again. But there were even bigger names in attendance. (I am such a tease.)

When photographing water polo. I like to get photos of offense and defense in the pool.

These two images show Maggie Steffens scoring on a penalty shot.

It was all smiles in the pool today.

I told you all about the glare on this pool. It was never fixed, but I am using it to get some cool backlit shots of the water.

Coach K doing his thing.

This is one of my favorite photos from the game, with mass chaos in front of Ashley.

Some more offense...

...and some more defense. The team was up by 8 goals and Adam put in the backup goaltender. This was awesome because it let me get some Olympic photos for her.

At the beginning of the game, my contact at USA Water Polo texted me that FLOTUS was in the house. Yep, Jill Biden was at the game. So I made sure to get some photos of her enjoying her first water polo game.

And I thought that would be my only photo of her. But no. After the game I was photographing some of the athletes in the mix zone (where they are interviewed by the press) when "my boss" came up to me and said "follow me, we are going to meet up with Jill Biden." How cool is that?

We went downstairs into a special area which I even I am not allowed to enter, and there was Jill Biden and a number of past Olympians. I asked Mrs. Biden if we could go out to a larger room to get a group shot and she was totally up for that.

Here is the group shot with the team and the VIPS. What a cool experience for a little ole photographer like me!

And now I am drinking some Merlot in my hotel room (so very French of me) and hoping to get some sleep soon.

Glad you had a better day today vs opening ceremonies. While watching the ceremonies on TV, I was thinking you must be having a difficult time. Best of luck to you in the upcoming days!

Glad you had the good fortune to have the FLOTUS for your pics--you deserve it for all your hard work! Thanks for the updates on top of your long hours.
