These are NOT my images from Costa Rica!

Over the years, you have probably seen a lot of my photos from the rain forest of Costa Rica, but in this blog post I am not sharing any of MY photos. These are the photos that the guests on my most recent photo tours captured with their cameras.

A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post showing the images from my guests and everyone loved that, so I figured it was time to do it again! I think that this really shows that, even without being a professional photographer, with some teaching and inspiration, amazing images can be captured.

I hope you enjoy the breadth of images here (with minimal writing from me)! They are in no particular order.

It is not easy to capture images of the Scarlet Macaw in flight.

This owl was buried in a tree, but I love that this guest was able to capture this great shot.

Nothing better than a mother and baby Howler monkey.

Another tough shot, as the dolphins popped up around us.

Great detail in the feathers of this bird.

This anteater was going to town in a nearby tree.

A hummingbird in flight and tack sharp on the eyes!

I love the leg position of this Red-eyed tree frog.

Great positioning of the snake and this guest got the tongue sticking out too.

A nice adult Iguana.

Another Howler monkey with good catch-light in the eyes.

A Fire-billed Aracari posing for us.

A fleeting moment right before this bug flew off.

A minimalistic view of the Dart frog.

We could never get enough of the Scarlet Macaw.

Lunch time...

A nice tight shot of this frog

This is a great shot of multiple dolphins mid-air!

A Spider monkey concentrating on some leaves.

A Three-toed sloth that was checking out my guest.

I love the black-and-white treatment to this photo.

Another great shot of that mother and baby Howler monkey.

A Red-eyed tree frog perched at the end of a leaf.

Another nice sloth photo.

I love the great colors of this snake and the angle to get perfect blur in the background.

A third view of this guest favorite duo.

Another great choice for B&W.

Nice tight shot of this Toucan with a treat.

Great sunlight on this Iguana.

Awesome interaction between these two birds!

"Huh?" This look made me laugh.

A very cool shot of a very cool hummingbird.

Two Toucans make a fourcan. :)

A Toucan in flight (this one taken in the cloud forest).

A rare sighting of a King vulture.

We saw many monkeys eating the apples in the trees on the hotel property.

Great colors in this photo...

...and this one.

Speaking of great color!

What is better than a great shot of a Squirrel monkey? Getting a great shot of multiple monkeys in one photo.

I love that this guest grabbed this shot of a Red-eyed tree frog that had jumped onto a Canon lens.

Another great in-flight shot.

Even we can be subjects for a photo!

This last photo made me laugh. I asked all my guests to send me their favorite photos from the trip and this guest decided to use AI to create the ultimate moment.  I always joked with them about getting a photo of a sloth riding on a dolphin so they did!

In all seriousness, I am really proud of all my guests, not only for the great images that they captured but also for getting along so well and making the trips such a pleasure for everyone. I always start each trip by telling my guests that the goal of the trip is to have fun, first and foremost. They did just that and took home some awesome photos as well. Great job everyone!

Alaska Photo Tour - The amazing colors and shapes of Icebergs and Glaciers!

I have shared images of the wildlife and scenery from Alaska, but not shared the really cool images of the amazing icebergs and glaciers that we saw on the trip. Well...today is the day that I share those images showing the beautiful blue colors and crystal clear formations with you all.

As our boat got closer and closer to the glaciers, we started seeing small pieces of ice in the water. We would try to find unique ways of photographing them against the backdrop of the rocks along the edge of the water.

We all had a great time looking for the unique shapes in the pieces of ice.

We were also excited to see the beautiful blue colors appearing in front of us.

As we came close to those pieces of ice, I encouraged everyone to zoom in tight (like many of my guests, I was using the Canon R5 MKII and Canon RF 100-500mm lens) to get photos like this. The ice almost looked like polished glass or diamonds.

We also saw some wildlife on the ice formations, like these birds hitching a ride...

...and this pup who was just hanging out on the ice.

Normally there would not be large pieces of ice up on the shoreline, but about two weeks before our trip, there was a very large landslide that created a tidal wave in the passage and pushed a lot of the ice onto the shoreline.

As you can see, the pieces of ice got much larger as we got closer to the glaciers.

The first glacier that we saw was cool, but a little dirty since there had not been any snow in a while.

It was still cool to the see the blue color coming out of the walls of ice.

Then we came upon a much larger glacier and we were all blown away. Look how pretty that one piece of ice looks in the foreground, with the clear ice with a ball in the middle.

We all had a blast photographing the intense blue walls of ice.

It was hard to figure out how to capture this massive wall in a photograph.

Since we were in a smaller boat, we could get very close to the glacier, unlike the larger cruise ships which had to turn around miles from the glaciers, due to the large pieces of ice in the water. Our smaller boat could maneuver around the icebergs whereas a larger ship can not. We saw this ship way in the distance, and as it turned around. I took this photo to show you how far it was from our vantage point.

In case you were wondering about the size of this particular glacier, you can get the perspective in this photo. If you look closely, you will see some of the large birds that were flying near the wall of ice. It was THAT big!

We were all taking photos from the front of the boat when we heard a loud cracking sound. Our captain told us that if we heard that, we would likely see a large piece break off from the wall. And seconds later, this tower (that had to be at least 40 feet high) calved into the water.

It made a huge splash and we watched as the birds made a mad dash to get out of the way.

Before we turned around and headed away from the glacier, I encouraged everyone to take a bunch of images to build a panorama later. I took 9 images with the Canon R5 Mark II camera from left to right and stitched them together to make this panorama photo in Photoshop. The file size is almost half a gigabyte, and I can zoom into any area of this photo and see amazing detail, like the individual birds in flight.

Well folks, that completes the blog posts from this Alaska photo tour. I hope you enjoyed seeing all the photos. We had a blast taking them! People have been emailing me asking if I am going to do this one again. The boat that I used for this trip was sold right after we completed my tour, but I am looking at other options for the future. Stay tuned. And if you are interested in my other photo tours, remember to check out this page.
