Every Winter Olympics I have done since and including Vancouver 2010, the gold medal game for the women has been USA vs Canada. The other night was a preview of what could be the gold medal match here in Milan and I thought it would be a close game. It turned out that it was not.
Before the game started, one of the staff from USA Hockey notified me of Kendall Coyne's pre-game ritual of fist pumping her husband and son, and suggested I get that photo. It was an awesome moment, but not the best of them from the night. More to come on that in a minute.
I stayed in that same area for the entry of the women from the locker room.
I was walking back to my position on the glass when I saw these fans in the stands. I still had the
Canon R1 with the
RF 7-14mm fisheye lens, so I pointed it in their direction and grabbed this photo.
Then it was game on.
Abbey Murphy made this awesome backhand pass to the front of the net to assist in the first goal.
This was one of those rare moments when the players were celebrating and all looking in my direction. Usually they are bunched up facing each other, but since Abbey was still making her way over there, they were all facing me. Four great smiles in one photo.
As always, I love getting that puck in the shot, especially when it is coming right at the goalie. It was really important that I got this photo, since Aerin delivered a shutout performance that night. This was the first time the Canadian woman have ever been shut out in an Olympic game.
This puck was nicely deflected and went wide to Aerin's left.
Good action shot.
This is a fun shot with the puck seemingly coming right at me.
During the second period, a puck got deflected off of a stick and went into the crowd. I looked over to my left to see if anyone got hurt, and saw that Kendall Coyne's husband, Michael (and their son Drew) got the puck.
I yelled up to Michael (who I had been communicating with before the game), and asked him to hold up Drew and the puck for a portrait. One of my favorite photos and moments from this game.
Then it was back to the glass for me and capturing more action.
More goals and more celebrations.
I am still using the
RF 7-14mm fisheye lenss up against the glass. If you are seeing me on television (and many of you are sending me images of me on your TV screens which is really fun) , you will see that every time the players get really close to where I am, I quickly grab the other camera and fire off some close range shots.
Game over and great victory for Team USA!
Trying something different, I quickly moved from one side of the rink to the other, to get the women as they exited the ice and made their way to the locker room.
I wanted to catch the smiles and elation after a really solid win.
Please excuse any typos. Normally I try to proof read everything before I post, but here at the Olympics, time is a commodity. I definitely miss some things. :)
