FINALLY - a production quality video of my photo tour!

I have not talked much about my son on the blog, but he has become an outstanding photographer and videographer himself, and for that I am really proud of him. Not only Connor, but his wife Emma as well. Both of them have their own business and do amazing work.

After many years of talking about bringing Connor down to Costa Rica with me, last month we finally made that happen. It was SO much fun to spend a lot of quality time with him and share the experience in one of my favorite places in the world. There was an added benefit as he shot and produced a video for me showing highlights from the photo tour.

Connor shot most of the footage on the Canon C80 video camera as well and the Canon R5 Mark II using a plethora of lenses from his collection and mine. I am super excited to share this video with you all, as I think it really captures the essence of my photo tour in the rain forest, and also shows the quality of Connor's work.

To see the three and a half minute video, you can click the image above or click HERE.

We both hope that you enjoy it!

Top 10 Features of Photoshop Every Photographer Should Know - Now on YouTube!

I recently taught another class for the B&H Event Space, called "10 Best Features of Photoshop Every Photographer Should Know," and it's now available online (thanks to Zenfolio for sponsoring)!

In this session, I started with a few slides before diving into a live demonstration, showing how I retouch my images using a core set of essential Photoshop tools. My focus was on enhancing a good photo with minimal effort, rather than overwhelming you with every feature available.

Honestly, I could have named it "The Hundreds of Photoshop Features You Don’t Need to Know"—but… 😆

You can check out the recorded video HERE or by clicking on the image below.

I hope you enjoy the video and learn something too.

And remember that the "J Tool" stands for "Jeff's favorite tool"!

My B&H presentation on Photo Tours - Recorded and online

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to give another presentation at the B&H Event Space, titled "Photo Tours - The Best of Travel Photography." In this session, I explored what defines a great photo tour and shared valuable insights on how to select the right one for your needs.

I kicked off the presentation with six key slides packed with useful information, aimed at providing a solid foundation for everyone. Then, I showcased a wide selection of images from past photo tours, discussing the best camera gear suited for various locations and subjects, and offering practical advice to help attendees capture stunning travel photographs.

You can check out the recorded video HERE or by clicking on the image below.

I was supposed to have another presentation today on "The 10 Best Features of Photoshop" but B&H had some technical issues, so it was postponed to next Tue, March 4 and 12pm PST (3pm EST). You can join in for that one from this page, and I will post it here on the blog when that one is completed.

And even though most of my photo tours are sold out for this year. I have a few openings left.

* 4 spots available for the Peru photo tour (June 24 - July 7)

* 4 spots available for the Galapagos photo tour (July 10 - 20)

All of my Costa Rica trips have been sold out for this year, but I just added new dates for 2026. I also will have many other cool adventures to come, which will be announced at a later date.

You can find more information of my tours HERE.

As always, these are first come, first serve. You can email me if you want to reserve a spot.

I hope you enjoy the video and learn something as well.

My first LIVE television interview: Yikes!

Last week I traveled up to Sacramento to the studios of FOX 40 for my first live TV interview. I have done plenty of pre-recorded video pieces, but never done one live. As it turns out, it was a lot of fun.

After NBC ran the piece on me last month, I received an email from a producer at FOX 40, who had seen the video, asking me if I would come up for an interview on their Studio40 show. Due to my travel schedule, we had to wait 3 weeks to make it happen, but last Wednesday we got it done.

This is what it looked like behind the scene.

I was supposed to be on air for 4 minutes, but they ended up letting it go for a full 9 minutes.

You can watch the interview here (or by clicking on the image below):

I hope you enjoy the interview.

BTW - I messed up on one detail in the interview. For those who have followed the blog for numerous Olympics, see if you can find that one mistake. :)

An honor to be featured on NBC news!

To celebrate the 6 month countdown to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, NBC has started their marketing machine to get everyone excited about the upcoming Games. As part of that campaign, NBC sent a reporter down my way about 3 weeks ago and interviewed me for a couple of hours to create a profile on me for the 6pm news.

That piece ran on Friday evening as me and my friends watched at home. I was not nervous during the interview process, but I was a little nervous about how they would edit the video and what they would say. As it turns out, I think they did a nice job with the segment. Phew!

I thought I would share this with all of you. You can click the image below or just click here to see the segment.

Luckily they showed more of my images, than my ugly face! 😀

Two new videos: Interview with Steve Wozniak and a tutorial video on fill flash

I have added two new videos to my YouTube channel this week.

The first video is the interview with Steve Wozniak (the inventor and founder of Apple) which was recorded last Thursday afternoon. We had so many people that some were not able to connect up with us live. Luckily the entire segment was recorded.

It was a rare chance for people to see Woz in an informal setting, sharing his stories about the early days of digital imaging and more.

You can click on the image above to watch the video. I know you will enjoy it.

WHEN YOU ARE ON THE YOUTUBE CHANNEL, DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE!

The second video is much shorter but briefly explains how and why I use my flash when shooting portraits outside in daylight.

You can click on the image above to watch this video.

I hope you find both the videos entertaining and informative.

NEW VIDEO: Night Photography - Tips and Tricks

One of my favorite times to take photos is after the sun has dropped below the horizon. Not only is it more challenging to shoot during this time, but the images can be really dynamic.  Since so many of you have told me you prefer videos explaining my techniques, I just completed a new video on this subject.

You can click the image above to watch the video

In this new video, I share my tips and tricks with all of you so that you can capture great night shots of your own.

Here are some of my favorite night photos, which are featured in the video...

The Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England

Old Town Boston

Cologne, Germany during the blue hour

The Bay Bridge in San Francisco (my home town)

The Sydney Opera House during the VIVID light show

Rolling the zoom during the exposure in New York City (explained in the video)

Again, you can watch the video by clicking this link. Enjoy!!!

A unique view of the Apple Park "Spaceship" in Cupertino, CA

As we continue living under the cloud of Covid-19, I am getting more and more stir crazy, and looking for new ways to get creative. About a month ago, I had an idea to dust off the DJI Phantom 4 drone, which hasn't been used in forever, and to fly over the new Apple campus.

Normally, this would not be possible, with so many people in the area. But now that this massive campus is basically a ghost town, I thought that it would be interesting to get photos and video capturing this unique perspective.

We had perfect weather this weekend and I decided that it was time to make this happen.

As you can see from this first image, the Apple headquarters (which people have knick-named the "Spaceship") is absolutely massive! But I will get to that a little later. Before I do that, I wanted to show you some images I captured back in 2015 and 2016 as they were building this structure.

This was 5 years ago when this was a giant construction zone.

In 2016, I went back with my Phantom 3 drone and captured these images of the building midway through construction.

And as I mentioned, this weekend was the perfect time to take photos and videos of Apple Park. I flew the Phantom 4 around the campus for at least 20 minutes and had a great time collecting really exciting video.

I got home and started going through the video clips to build a short film of what I had seen. As I was putting together the different clips in Adobe Premier Pro, I realized that it would be really cool to go back through the old footage to combine those into this short piece. I also researched some of the amazing facts about this campus and added those to the film.

I hope that you take a look at the new video and be awe inspired for yourself. This is like no other building you have ever seen.

NEW VIDEO - Leading Lines and Repeating Patterns in Photography

In this new video, I talk about the use of leading lines and repeating patterns in the composition of photos. It is a simple technique, but one that can add a lot of drama to an otherwise plain image. I hope that, after watching this video, you will search out interesting leading lines and patterns to make your photos that much better.

A super fun photo project for you to try at home - photographing water drops!

We are currently in day 93 of the shelter-in-place here in Northern California and I don't know about you, but I am going stir crazy. Two days ago, I decided that I needed to challenge myself with a photo project here at the house. A couple of ideas came to mind, but the one that I was most excited about was photographing water drops. I had done this for the first time about 10 years ago, and then again 6 years ago, but my photography skills have gotten better and I thought it was time to try it once again.

The whole setup only took about 15 minutes (with a frying pan, a ziplock bag, water, my camera and flash) and it was surprisingly easy to get photos like these. It was so easy that I thought "This would make a great video to show you all how to do this at your house." So yesterday I shot and edited a "How-to" video to share with you.

If you like these photos, you need to try it yourself.

I kept changing the objects in the background to get different reflections in the water and drops.

It is fun to shoot images and different points of the water drop.

You might be wondering how I got these colors reflecting in the pan of water. You will have to watch the video to see how I achieved this.

Click on the video above to watch how to create images like these for yourself.

Ok - the challenge is on for you, your family and friends! I hope that you capture some awesome photos. Post them to social media and amaze your friends. Oh, and make to tag me (@jeffcablephotography) so I can see them as well. Haver fun!

New photography video: Get out of automatic mode

I just released another photography video to my YouTube channel. This video is aimed at the novice camera owner who still has their DSLR camera in automatic mode. Believe it or not, most people who own DSLR cameras do not know how to get the most out of them. A high percentage of those camera owners leave the DSLR in automatic mode, which does not help them get great photos. In this video, I encourage those people to get out of automatic mode, explain why this is better, and help them take control of their cameras. This will help those people get better photos and have a lot more fun taking them!

You can click on the image above to launch the video.

Two more photography videos released to YouTube

As part of my new short video series, I have released two more videos which will hopefully be of interest to you.

The first video shares one of my favorite Photoshop tricks, showing you how to create a brush out of your logo or signature, and then using those brushes to easily watermark your photos.

You can click on the image above to watch the video.

The second video talks about the importance of shooting photos to both memory card slots in your camera (assuming you have two). Yes, I always shoot RAW files to both memory cards, to make sure that, in the event that one card fails, I still have the photos for myself or my client. Having spent many years of my life in the memory card business, I know many of the things that can go wrong between your camera and your memory card, and want to protect you from catastrophic problems as best I can.

You can click on the image above to watch the video.

I hope that you learn something from the videos and that you all have an enjoyable weekend.

New video on photographing peak of action

When photographing things that are in motion, whether it is kids, athletes, wildlife or other subjects, you want to get the shot with them in the peak of action. Your best bet for capturing this exact moment is to have your camera in a burst mode when shooting. This video explains that and more.

I hope you enjoy it and learn from it as well.

The first in my new series of instructional videos: Servo focus vs. fixed focus

I am really excited to release the first in my new series of instructional videos.

Each of these videos is kept short and sweet, trying to give you valuable information in a short amount of time.

This first video explains the difference between fixed focus and servo (or follow) focus in your camera. Knowing how to change these focus modes can make a HUGE difference in the quality of your photos. This video explains why that is the case.

You can click on the image above to watch the video. And, while on the YouTube page, don't forget to subscribe to the channel.

I hope that you enjoy this and the upcoming videos and learn from them as well.

A whole new series of free photo tip videos for you all!

After years of people asking me to do video tutorials of my tips and tricks in photography, the time has come. With the slowdown associated with Covid-19, I have have been using that free time to shoot and edit a bunch of short videos (usually between 2-5 minutes) that I hope will help all of you to take better photos.

You can click on the image above to see my short introduction. You will also notice a super cool new lead-in and lead-out that my buddy Jason created for me.

I have already completed 20 videos and plan to roll out a new video at least once a week.

Make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to see them all!

And this is just the beginning. I have a long list of ideas for other videos, and hope to record them soon. And, of course, if you have any ideas of videos you would like to see, please leave a comment here on the blog or send me an email.

A CES recap - and a slightly scary look into our future?

I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and I have had a couple of days to process everything that I saw there. I also took my 21 year old daughter with me, so it was interesting to get her perspective as well.

Let me start by saying that I have always liked the CES show since I am a gadget guy at heart. I could do without the large crowds, endless lines, and being charged double prices for everything at Starbucks in the hotel, but I guess that is part of the experience.

This year, like most other years, the big electronics companies were showing off their bigger and higher resolution televisions. Just when people are getting familiar with 4K TVs, all the big companies were showing their upcoming 8K screens. And along with those new higher resolution sets, they were also showing off the OLED technology. The video above shows what I felt was the most impressive booth at the show, with LG proudly displaying this mass of OLED screens. Click on the video above to get the full experience.

Canon was not showing off any new DSLR or mirrorless cameras, but did have this Canon EOS R and Canon RF 28-70mm lens laser-cut in half. That was pretty cool to see.

What made this year slightly different for me was that I left that show without seeing one thing that I just had to have. In past years, I always came across at least one cool new piece of technology that had me drooling.

What I found most interesting about this year's show was the abundance of products being designed because the technology exists, not so much that we all need it. Let me explain that a little bit. We saw all types of appliances for the home which had integrated high-def screens and voice commands. We saw pet feeders which allow you to communicate and reward your pet from afar. There were wearable devices for just about everything, some interesting and some just ridiculous. But, as my friend Steve Wozniak says, "products should be designed because we need them, not just because they can be built."

Walking around the South Hall of the show, we came across this prototype of a flying car, and everyone was stopping to look at the vehicle and watch the company's video. It wasn't until we walked away that my daughter turned to me and said "Isn't that basically the helicopter that we already have today?" And she was exactly right.

I took my daughter into the North Hall so that she could see all the automobile exhibits. Amazingly, what used to be a large and loud hall full of car audio and car navigation systems was now a quiet hall full of technology for autonomous driving.

We saw lots and lots of autonomous vehicles that were more like pods than cars, and each of them promising the driverless experience with large screens surrounding the inside of the vehicle. As I looked into these, I thought "I guess people will spend even more time in front of screens in the future and never again look outside a car window." That scares me a bit.

All in all, the show was interesting, but left me wondering what percentage of these product concepts would hit the market and stick. I guess only time will tell.

Oh, and speaking of technology, I took all the photos and videos that you see here with the tiny little DJI Osmo Pocket. This is a pretty cool little toy that I will be taking with me to Africa tomorrow. As we walked back to our hotel on the last day of the show, I saw this reflection shot, raised the Osmo over the wall and grabbed this shot. Not too shabby for a tiny little thing.

If you were one of the 200,000 people at the CES show, I would love to know your thoughts about what you saw.
